Create an MP4 Video From Your PowerPoint 13 Presentation

In a previous post of mine, I had mentioned the capability of creating a video file from a PowerPoint Presentation in Office 2010 (Greek Version). The only lack then, was the fact that we could only create a Windows Media Video (.wmv) file. Fortunately, Microsoft Office 13 is here, and especially PowerPoint 13, which gives us the capability to create a MP4 video file from our presentation.

Let’s find out these steps for those who haven’t read the previous post (which was in Greek) and for those who have, to refresh their memory.

First of all we must have our Presentation open and then select the File tab in order to go to backstage view as we can see in the image below and then select the category Export from the left of the drop down menu as shown below.

Create A Video

Once we select the category Export, from the center of the drop down menu and under Export we select the command Create A Video as shown below.

Create A Video Details

From here and at the right of the window under the category Create A Video if we open the first drop down menu we have the following options which we can define about the quality of the video that we want to create as shown in the image below:

  • Computer & HD Displays (For viewing on a computer monitor, projector, or high definition display (Large – 960 x 720).
  • Internet & DVD (For uploading to the Web and burning to standard DVD (Medium 640 x 480).
  • Portable Devices (Microsoft Zune video quality; Small text may be difficult to read (Small – 320 x 240).

If we have used Timings and Narrations in our presentation, we can include or not include them in our video by selecting one of the following options as shown below:

  • Don’t Use Recorded Timings And Narrations
  • Use Recorded Timings And Narrations
  • Record Timing And Narrations
  • Preview Timing And Narrations

Don't Use Recorded Timings

Once we are done with the above settings we can define on how many seconds we want to spend on each slide as shown in the image below by selecting the up and down arrows at the right of the command.

Finally we just press the Create Video button.

Create Video Icon

The Create Video window opens where at the bottom of the window and next to the command Save As Type we open the drop down menu to select the format that we want our video to be saved as. The types available are MPEG-4 Video (*.mp4) and Windows Media Video (*.wmv). We just select the type that we want, we define the location and the name of the file and we press the Save button.

MPEG-4 Video

Depending on the size of our presentation it might take a while in order to be converted as a video. We can see the process of the converting at the bottom of our Presentation screen as shown in the image below. We can cancel the process if we desire by pressing the X button.
