Redefine What Marks An Email As Already Read

In Outlook, unread messages are colored differently than messages that we have read. It is easy though for an email to be marked as read when we just had a quick look at it, and the message was important that we might have overlooked. In Outlook we can adjust the number of seconds we want the message to be marked as read. For this to be done, we just follow the steps below.

First, we must select the File tab in order to move to backstage view, and then from the drop down menu that appears we select the category Options from the left as shown in the image below.

File - Options

Once selected the Outlook Options window appears where from the left of the window we select the Mail category as shown below. Then we navigate in the middle of the window until we locate the area named Outlook Panes. Then next, where it mentions Customize How Items Are Marked As Read When Using The Reading Pane we press on the button named Reading Pane as shown below.

Outlook Options - Mail - Outlook Panes

The Reading Pane dialog box appears where we have the following options to activate or deactivate:

  • Mark Items As Read When Viewed In The Reading Pane. (if we activate this command, then we can define how many seconds to Wait Before Marking Item As Read.
  • Mark Item As Read When Selection Changes
  • Single Key Reading Using Space Bar

Reading Pane

Once we have done the adjustments that we want we press the OK button from the Reading Pane and the OK button from the Outlook Options window in order to return to our mailbox.

Below you can check out the video describing how to redefine what marks an email as already read in Outlook 13.
