Sort A List Alphabetically in Word 13

It is easy to sort lists in Excel, but what happens when we want to sort lists in a Word document? What happens when we want to sort it either alphabetically, numerically or even by dates? This is where the Sort feature comes up! All we need to do is to follow the steps below:

In the image below, we can see list of names that are unsorted. The first step is to select the list of names as shown.

Selected Text

Once the list of names are selected, we make sure that the Home tab is activated, and then from the area of the ribbon named Paragraph we select the Sort command as shown below. With this command, we can arrange the current selection in an alphabetical or numerical order.

Once the Sort command is selected, the Sort Text dialog box appears as shown below.

Sort Text

In this dialog box we can sort our list by:

  • Paragraphs
  • Headings
  • Field 1

Once we select what we want to sort, at the right we can select from the drop down menu either to sort by:

  • Text
  • Number
  • Date

Then we have the option to sort our list either by Ascending or Descending.

We have the option to sort our list in three different ways. All we have to do is to activate the appropriate boxes.

Sort Text By

At the bottom of the Sort Text dialog box, we can activate either one of the two check boxes next to the commands depending on what we have.

  • Header Row
  • No Header Row

If we want to Sort our list with more advanced options, we activate the Options button on the Sort Text dialog box, which is located at the bottom left corner of the window as shown below, where the Sort Options dialog appears. Whatever changes we make, at the end we press the OK button on both of the dialog boxes in order to return to our document, and for the changes to be applied.

In the image below, we can see how our list has been sorted alphabetically.

Below you can check out the video describing the Sort feature in Word 13.
