Insert A Drop Cap in Word
Posted by Smart Office - philippospan
It is a custom habit, to use initials to set off the first letter of a chapter or a paragraph. This feature in Microsoft Office Word is named as a Drop Cap. A Drop Cap is a large capital letter at the beginning of the text which takes up of two or more lines of the paragraph. In order to use the Drop Cap feature, all you have to do is to follow the steps below.
First we must select the Insert tab and then we have to locate the area of the ribbon named Text as shown in the image below.
We must make sure that our cursor is in the beginning of the paragraph, and then from the Text area of the ribbon we select the command Drop Cap as shown in the image below. The drop down menu appears with the following commands:
None: It is the default option, which means nothing changes to the paragraph.
Dropped: The first letter of the paragraph increases the size of it and then reinserts the letter so that it aligns within the paragraph.
In Margin: The first letter of the paragraph increases the size of it and then reinserts the letter so that it aligns with the margins.
Drop Cap Options: Opens the dialog box Drop Cap, with more available options.
In the image below we can see example of the Dropped command. Straight away the first letter of the paragraph increases and gets inline within the paragraph.
In the image below we can see example of the In Margin command. Straight away the first letter of the paragraph increases and gets aligned with the Margins.
In the image below I have selected the Drop Cap Options command and straight away the Drop Cap dialog box appears where we have the following options:
Position: We have the same choices as we had in the drop down menu in order to position the Drop Cap.
Font: We can change the Font that we want for the Drop Cap.
Lines To Drop: We can select how many lines the Drop Cap will take.
Distance From Text: We can define the distance that the Drop Cap will have from the text of the paragraph.
Once we have done all the adjustments all we have to do is to press the OK button in order for theme to take place.
Below you can check out the video describing the Drop Cap feature in Microsoft Office Word.
