Insert 3D Maps in Excel 2016

3D Maps in Excel 2016

As mentioned in my previous post Power Map in Excel 13, the 3-D geospatial visualization add-in is fully integrated into Excel 2016. The new name of this feature is 3D Maps, and is available on the Insert tab and under the area named Tours.

The 3D-Maps feature is a three dimensional data visualization tool that lets us look at information in new ways. It lets us discover insights that we might have not seen in traditional two dimensional charts.

In the image below you can see the Worksheet containing all the necessary data in order to use the Insert 3D Map command in Excel 2016.

Table in Excel

Once we have all the data needed, we then select the Insert tab and from the right area of the ribbon named Tours we select the 3D Map command as shown in the image below. We can See Our Geographic Data On A 3D Map, Visualized Over Time.

Once the 3Map command is selected, the Launch 3D Maps dialog box or at the bottom appears as shown below. In this dialog box we can either select an existing Tour or at the bottom right corner we can select the New Tour command. For this post I have selected an existing Tour which is name Power Stations.

Launch 3D Maps

Straight away, the 3D-Map ribbon is available with all the commands, which were described in my previous post Power Map in Excel 13. Because, no Data was selected we have no visualization of the Map. That is why at the right area of the 3D-Map window we are notified that 3D Maps Needs Data To Work With. In order to get the data that we want, we must activate the Worksheet that contains the Data.

Power Map Tab

In the image below, I have activated the Worksheet that contains the Data, and then from the Insert tab and from the area of the ribbon named Tours, I selected the 3D-Maps command as shown below. From the drop down menu we must select the command Add Selected Data To 3D Maps.

Add Selected Data To Maps

Once the Add Selected Data To 3D Maps is selected, the Visualization of the selected Data appears in the 3D-Map window as we can see below. Once again, I must mention that if you want to find out more details about 3D-Maps in Excel 2016, have a look at the previous post of mine Power Map in Excel 13.
