How To Show Formulas Instead Of Values in Excel

Show Formula

In Excel 2016 and in previous version of Excel, we have the option to display the Formulas in the Cells instead of the Calculated Results. This comes handy, if we are working in a Worksheet with a lot of Formulas in it and we want to understand how all these Formulas relate to each other. This way we can track the data that is used in each calculation so we can quickly check our Formulas for errors. The procedure to quickly display Formulas in Cells is described in this post.

As we can see in the following image the Cell F7 is activated. In this Cell, we see the Calculated Result instead of the Formula. The Formula can be seen in the Formula Bar, where in this example the Formula is =sum(B7:E7).

Calculated Results

First, we must select the File tab in order to move to Backstage View. Once in Backstage View, from the drop-down menu we select the category Options from the left as shown below. Once selected, the Excel Options dialog box appears, where from the left we select the command Advanced.

Once the Advanced category is selected, we must scroll down in order to locate the area named Display Options For This Worksheet.

All that is left, is to activate the check box at the left of the command Show Formulas In Cells Instead Of Their Calculated Results. Once activated, we press the OK button of the Excel Options dialog box in order to return to our Worksheet.

Now in our Worksheet, we notice that where the Results of the Calculated Cells appeared, the actual Formulas are shown.

For the Calculated Results to appear once again, we must follow the same procedure that was described above.
